Grease Analysis as a Tool to Optimize Lubricant and Machine Life – Rich Wurzbach

Ultrasound…Beyond the Essentials™ Episode 10 – April 28 – 11AM ET

Rich Wurzbach – CLS, MLE – MRG Labs

Rich Wurzbach is a Certified Lubrication Specialist (CLS) and Machine Lubrication Engineer (MLE) and has extensive experience as a trainer and manager of a Lubricant Analysis Laboratory since 1989. He was responsible for lube oil systems in nuclear power plants, and developed lubrication programs for pharmaceutical manufacturers and the National Institutes of Health.  He teaches classes for certification by ICML, including Machinery Lubricant Analyst, Machine Lubrication Technician, and Laboratory Lubricant Analyst. He has conducted training for various Condition Based Maintenance technologies, such as ultrasound, vibration analysis, and is an ASNT Level III in Infrared Thermography.  He holds four patents related to lubricant sampling and analysis.

This webinar will outline the value and information that can be provided from properly taken grease samples. Sampling techniques and tools outlined in ASTM D7718 method for inservice grease sampling will be shared. Grease testing techniques possible with small grease sample volumes will be introduced along with strategies for predicting grease life based on operating conditions and lubricant properties. Complementing an ultrasound-based monitoring strategy with periodic grease sampling will be discussed as a path to optimizing lubricant performance and extending machine life.

Takeaways:

  1. How to obtain a representative grease sample
  2. Setting a grease analysis test slate and monitoring schedule
  3. Establishing a Lube Optimization Plan using ultrasound and grease analysis
